Celebrating MURPHY

Documentary footage following the intense rehearsals of MURPHY, a program paying tribute to Graeme Murphy AO in a revival by The Australian Ballet of his groundbreaking work from 1979 to 2011; including Sheherazade (a work that Graeme with his wife and artistic partner, Janet Vernon, not only created 40 years ago but also danced), Air and Other Invisible Forces, Grand and Ellipse, in a special anniversary tribute… a fascinating process of reconstruction which presented a lot of challenges, nostalgia and emotions for all involved…

We also made a couple of videos that were part of MURPHY performances, including Reflections projected at the start of the show, in which Graeme  explains his choreographic raison d’être of allowing a dancer’s soul to become “the shining mirror that reflects the world”. Review

A film montage of Graeme Murphy’s lifetime work was also created  for the Arts Centre Melbourne, projected within a small exhibition by the Australian Performing Arts Collection (see photo in Gallery), then projected during the subsequent  Sydney Opera House’s MURPHY season. We also provided footage from the original works we filmed (Sheherazade, Air and Other Invisible Forces, Grand and Ellipse) for The Australian Ballet’s online promotion

This feature documentary (98 min) follows David McAllister, Artistic Director of The Australian Ballet, with his creative team and dancers, as he creates his first full-length ballet.

This program gives the audience a rare and privileged glimpse behind-the-scenes as the company prepares, creates and premieres one of the largest and most important productions in it’s 53 year history. From this revealing journey with its share of pain, sweat and tears, the enigma of Classical Ballet is demystified as the audience not only discover the human side of this remarkable process, but an understanding of The Australian Ballet in the global context.
