The Successor

The high stakes life of Lachlan Murdoch

The first major biography of Lachlan Murdoch written by Paddy Manning, about one of the world’s most powerful and enigmatic people – an epic saga of ruthless power plays and family battles. This is a book about the good, the bad and the ugly of the global media, and about America in the age of Trump and Biden. It is a book about power, apprenticeship, politics and succession.

Man Bites Murdoch

by Bruce Guthrie (Author)

Bruce Guthrie survived a boss who twice tried to sack him in his first six months in newspapers, to become a foreign correspondent and then one of Australia’s feistiest and most controversial editors. His CV boasts editorships of Australian newspaper and magazines, even a high level stint at America’s celeb-news bible, People. Then, just as he claimed one of the industry’s most glittering prizes, he fell foul of Rupert Murdoch and his henchmen, who promptly dispensed with his services. What would any self-respecting boy do in such circumstances? Sue them, of course.

Al-Jazeera

Written by Hugh Miles (Author)

With more than 100 million viewers, Al Jazeera is one of the most widely watched channels in the world. It’s also one of the most controversial. Financed by one of the weathiest countries in the world, Al Jazeera quickly established itself as the premiere news channel in the Islamic world by covering events Arabs cared about in a way they had never seen before. However, accusations of ties to Al Qaeda continue to plague it. Their journalists have been accused of spying for everyone from Mossad to Saddam Hussein, sometimes simultaneously.

Lost in Transmission

Jonathan Harley knew that becoming the ABC’s man in South Asia at the age of only 28 was a dream job. From covering India’s endearingly over-the-top response to the death of cricketing legend Don Bradman to being the only Australian journalist in Afghanistan on September 11, Lost in Transmission is Harley’s exciting, often moving, funny and disarmingly honest account of 3 years he spent, lurching from one hair-raising misadventure to the next, reporting from one of the most exotic and, as events unfurled, alarming corners of the planet.

Witness

By by Louise Milligan (author)

A masterful & deeply troubling exposé. Throughout her career charting the experiences of people who have the courage to come forward to police & then look to find justice in court, Milligan has watched how witnesses are often mistreated in the courtroom. This is a compelling call for change.

Describes what has been happening in the world since 1997 from the perspective of one at the heart of international events.

Love and Devotion: from Persia and Beyond

BOOK (Editor: Susan Scollay) + DVD offer

Tales of earthly and spiritual love were recounted and reinterpreted by Persian poets from the 11th century onwards. Stories of lovers such as Yusuf and Zulaykha, Khusrau and Shirin, and Layla and Majnun were embraced not only in Iran but also in the neighbouring Mughal and Ottoman empires. In courtly settings versified epics and lyrical couplets were copied into illustrated manuscripts for elite patrons in the eastern Islamic world, for whom poetry was a key component of cultural life from the 14th to the18th centuries. Parallels and echoes of these timeless tales and the masterful words of poets such as Saadi, Attar, Hafiz and Rumi intersect with European literature from the time of Dante and Shakespeare up to the present day.

In this book leading specialists in literature, art history and philosophy reveal new perspectives on the evocative world conjured up by these stories of love and devotion from Persian poetry and the exquisitely-coloured miniature paintings that embellish them. The 220 page book presents full-page reproductions of more than 130 folios from illustrated manuscripts and works from the collections of the Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford, and from the State Library of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia, many reproduced for the first time (this volume will appeal to both specialist and general readers)

Price (as new): $125 AUD + postage email link

This stunning book comes with a 28 min documentary DVD

Traveling across the world for the first time, many rare manuscripts dating from the 13th to 18th centuries are put on display for us to experience the detail and beauty of Persian illumination, calligraphy and poetic stories that date back to antiquity, yet transcend time and place. Within this setting, a precious window is opened – and this documentary offers a unique opportunity to explore this extraordinarily rich cultural past and its dialogue with Western literature.

The Shahnama of Shah Tahmasp

Also known as The Persian Book of Kings

Publisher: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2011. First Edition
45.5cm x 31cm. 288 pages, 300 colour illustrations. Blue cloth, gilt lettering, illustrated slipcase.

One of the most voluminous epics of world literature, the Shahnama (or “Book of Kings”) narrates the history of the ancient kings of Iran, from their mythical beginnings to the Arab conquest in 651 A.D. Although illustrated copies of the poem were commissioned by numerous Iranian kings, the Shahnama of Shah Tahmasp (r. 1524-1576) is arguably the most important and beautifully illustrated version ever produced. It was created by two generations of the most renowned early-16th-century artists at the royal atelier in Tabriz, the first capital of the Safavid dynasty. Characterized by calligraphy, painting, and illuminations of exquisite quality and artistic originality, the volume is considered one of the highest achievements in the arts of the book. After its creation, the Shahnama of Shah Tahmasp travelled through several royal collections until it was broken up and dispersed in the 20th century. Now, accompanying the 759 folios of text, written in superb nasta‘liq script, for the first time, all 258 illuminated pages of this famous volume are reproduced in colour and close to their original size in this sumptuous publication (see Gallery Tab above for more pictures).

DVD: Cinematographer Style

This film is about the art of how and why films look the way they do. A feature documentary, this film explores the nuances of the universal art of visual story-telling. Director Jon Fauer, ASC, visited with 110 cinematographers from 15 countries who have worked in all sectors of the industry, including feature films, television, documentaries, commercials and music videos. Shot on 35mm film, the interviews were edited down to a 90-minute story.

DVD: VISIONS OF LIGHT – The Art of Cinematography

Since the beginning of cinema, directors’ names have been widely known, and the cult of the movie star is almost as old as artform itself. Often overlooked, however, and seldom less a contributor to the final cut is the cinematographe who creates the image to be recorded in that artificial eye, the camera. This film by Arnold Glassman goes some considerable way towards redressing that oversight. A study in cinematography, this 90 min program features interviews with no less than 29 lighting cameramen and directors who acknowledge and illustrate their influences, mentors, and inspiration over 100 film clips, and who share with us some of their secrets.

“(1807–1879), a French Orientalist, author and artist, was one of the greatest pre-20th century Egyptologists. An ardent admirer of the superb skills of Egyptian and Oriental artisans, he was enamoured of Arabic art. Over 40 years he explored Syria, Arabia, Persia, and resided in Egypt and Algeria. Converting to Islam, he travelled Egypt disguised as an Arab, using the name Edris Effendi. A student of ancient Egyptian and Islamic cultures, he later wrote: “We shall discuss all the arts, all the industries cultivated by Orientals with so much taste, brilliance, and fantasy. We will present splendid reproductions of the monuments, objects of art and luxury, which provide evidence of an advanced civilization, the influence of which has been felt even in Europe.”

The plates are absolutely stunning (a couple are actually 4 times the size of the book when unfolded).

Rosas danst Rosas (57 min – 1997)

Since its creation in 1983, Rosas danst Rosas has remained a benchmark piece in the Rosas repertoire. In his film shot in Leuven in the former technical school of architect Henry Van de Velde, De Mey has created a compelling cinematographic interpretation of this seminal performance. The sharp rhythmical editing creates a startling visual dynamic that interplays with that of the choreography.

PLAY (106 min – 2017)

Sweedish choreographer Alexander Ekman was invited to work with the Paris Opera Ballet. His language, both visceral and tinged with humour, combining theatricality, and classical and contemporary vocabulary alike, perfectly resonates with the incredible versatility and stage presence of the Ballet: the result is a piece that evokes the world of childhood and it’s careless pleasures. Beyond pure entertainment, this performance contemplates the meaning and the importance of play when we become adults.

Ballet Russes (118 min – 2008)

A dazzlingly entrancing ode to the revolutionary twentieth-century dance troupe known as the Ballets Russes. What began as a group of Russian refugees, this inventive documentary maps the company’s beginnings in turn-of-the-century Paris; through to the halcyon days of the ’30s and ’40s, touring America, astonishing audiences with artistry never before seen. The film also explores its demise in the 1950s and ’60s. Infused with juicy interviews from the company’s glamorous stars, Ballets Russes treats modern audiences to a rare glimpse of the remarkable merger of Russian, American, European and Latin American dancers, choreographers, composers and designers that transformed the face of ballet for generations to come. Ballets Russes takes you on a fascinating journey through the lives of characters whose innovation changed our social histories.

Two 55 min DVD’s choreographed by Lucy Guerin.

a) Structure and Sadness centres around the collapse of the West Gate Bridge in 1970—a tragic event in Australia’s history etched in Melbourne’s public psyche. Not only did this event cause significant structural damage, including the collapse of 2000 tonnes of steel; it also resulted in a private and public outpouring of grief following the deaths of 35 construction workers.

Swan Lake (136 min – 2008)

It’s a familiar tale – a love triangle between a princess, her prince, and a woman with a prior claim on his heart. Graeme Murphy’s choreography is at once a homage to the grandeur of 19th-century classicism and an invigorating update that speaks compellingly to the audiences of today.

Enter the Faun (68 min – 2015)

The unlikely collaboration between a veteran choreographer and a young actor with cerebral palsy delivers astonishing proof that each and every body is capable of miraculous transformation. As Tamar Rogoff trains Gregg Mozgala to become a dancer, they discover that her lack of formal medical training and his fears and physical limitations are not obstacles, but the impetus for their unprecedented discoveries. “Enter The Faun” is the story of a joyous, obsessed journey towards opening night.
Cinematographer Style

This film is about the art of how and why films look the way they do. A feature documentary, this film explores the nuances of the universal art of visual story-telling. Director Jon Fauer, ASC, visited with 110 cinematographers from 15 countries who have worked in all sectors of the industry, including feature films, television, documentaries, commercials and music videos. Shot on 35mm film, the interviews were edited down to a 90-minute story.

VISIONS OF LIGHT – The Art of Cinematography

Since the beginning of cinema, directors’ names have been widely known, and the cult of the movie star is almost as old as artform itself. Often overlooked, however, and seldom less a contributor to the final cut is the cinematographe who creates the image to be recorded in that artificial eye, the camera. This film by Arnold Glassman goes some considerable way towards redressing that oversight. A study in cinematography, this 90 min program features interviews with no less than 29 lighting cameramen and directors who acknowledge and illustrate their influences and inspiration over 100 film clips, and who share with us some of their secrets.

Aspect of a Life – working with indigenous Australians

LALAI DREAMTIME (1972, 60 min)

FLOATING … LIKE WIND BLOW ‘EM ABOUT (1975, 58 min)

HERE’S MY HAND: A testimony to an Aboriginal Memorial (1988, 27 min)

These four films by filmmaker Michael Edols represent a significant and sustained body of work, produced over 16 years, recording the culture and history of Indigenous communities, especially in the Kimberleys, in the north-west of Western Australia. Recruited by Elders from three tribal language groups – Worrora, Wunamble and Ngarinyin – to collaborate with them in making films, Edols and the communities both recorded and reconstructed their culture, past and present, from pre-European contact (in Lalai Dreamtime) to their present dislocated, mission-based lifestyle (in Floating).

Note: this DVD collection is accompanied by a short book written by Michael Edols to accompany the films and to assist with study and understanding.
The set also includes a 40-minute interview with the late Edols recorded in 2011, talking about his collaboration with Indigenous communities.

CAPA in COLOR

This beautiful book looks at Robert Capa’s color photography, a little-known but important aspect of the great photographer’s work, and includes many never-before-published images. Famed photojournalist and founder of Magnum Photos, Robert Capa was primarily known for his black-and-white images. But after World War II he turned increasingly to color, fulfilling assignments for a variety of popular magazines such as Life and Holiday. This volume reproduces Capa’s color images in a wide variety of forms including prints, magazine spreads, book jackets, and other ephemera, revealing the photographer at a point in his career when his role as director of Magnum required that he keep up with current technology―both as a business decision and a way of capturing new assignments. This book also features a contextualizing essay by International Center of Photography curator Cynthia Young, travel writings by Capa and collaborators John Steinbeck and Irwin Shaw, and brief essays providing background on various reportages. (as new).

TIVOLI (hardback book with music CD and mystery DVD)

In 1966 the Tivoli ceased production, ending an era in Australia’s performing arts history. In this 240 pages book, lavishly illustrated with many photographs and posters, the curtain rises again on Australia’s great theatrical past. Frank Van Straten recalls all of Tivoli’s most famous names and faces. He reveals the on-stage hijinks, performances by the world’s best vaudeville, variety and revue artists. Includes bonus 60-minute music CD.

Full of short biographies on Tivoli celebrities, and rich with anecdotal quotes, this book is more than just a history: it captures the mood, the excitement and the dramas that faced the Tivoli circuit from its glory days to its sudden decline when television stole its audiences.

Funny, fond and flamboyant, ‘Tivoli’ will delight readers and there is of course a mention of Graeme Murphy’s fabulous show that celebrated the whole era of the Tivoli Circuit (video link)

DANCE AND PHOTOGRAPHY (William A. Ewing, 1987)
Here is dance history – from classical ballet to the cancan, from rock-and-roll to the hokey-cokey and contemporary dance – captured in 200 magnificently reproduced black and white photographs selected from tens of thousands in archives around the world. (good condition)

CHOREOGRAPHICS (Kelvin Robertson, 2007)
A small book (15 x 21 cm) showcasing dance paintings by Kelvin Robertson. In the words of dance-writer Valerie Lawson, Robertson “found his niche; his economical style shows an understanding of the dancer, both in technique and artistry. In a few lines, or cut-out shapes, he captures the spiral of their shoulder joints, the stretchy, flexi-extension of their legs and the long columns of their necks.” (good condition)
